WALKIN-TO-NEW-ORLEANS ACTION PLANS

Overall Objective: Encourage evacuees to return to New Orleans, so that they can participate in rebuilding the city and their lives.

• Find temporary housing or permanent affordable housing for returning evacuees
• Preparing the Laid Back Tours shop to be used as a post-Katrina evacuee help center providing information and help dealing with government bureaucracy as well as fax, phone, computer, coping and notarial services.
• Work with other grassroots organizations to place a temporary moratorium on rent increases to protect returning renters from profiteering. If eviction is deemed necessary because the unit needs hurricane damage repairs, make sure that renters have first right-of-return.
• Work with other groups to support easy, accessible absentee balloting and voter registration for evacuees who have not yet returned to New Orleans.
